Government Application Letter with Examples Addressing The Criteria

Updated: Aug 13

To write a government cover letter, use the STAR method to highlight relevant experiences and skills. Address it to a specific person, mention the position and your interest, and provide concrete examples of your achievements. Conclude by expressing enthusiasm for the role and mentioning your attached resume.

Applying for a government role and need to address criteria in your application letter? I've got you covered with this free example to give you an idea of how to write that application.

To whom it may concern,

I am writing to express my interest in the Internal Communications Officer position at the Public Transport Authority. With a solid background in communications and a passion for facilitating effective internal dialogue, I am excited about the opportunity to contribute to the PTA's mission of providing efficient and reliable public transportation services. My experience and skills align closely with the requirements of the role, and I am eager to bring my expertise to your role. I have outlined how I meet your requirements below:

Core Competencies: I offer significant internal communication and engagement experience with the ability to deliver a broad range of communications, including print, online, social media and face-to-face, along with well-developed computer skills and the ability to negotiate with a range of internal and external stakeholders at all levels. I showed my stakeholder engagement capabilities through a collaborative effort to shape the Aboriginal Arts project.

I initiated discussions with the project team to gain an understanding of their objectives and I engaged with various stakeholders involved in the project. This included Indigenous communities, cultural experts, historians, technologists, and other relevant stakeholders. I ensured that all voices were heard in the collaborative process through active listening. Using the insights from these engagements, I facilitated a series of meetings to refine the project's scope. Leveraging the gallery visualisation systems, we explored ways to interpret the cultural significance of the Aboriginal Art Project through experiences such as full VR, 360 video, and animation.

Despite the initial enthusiasm, it became clear that the project required further development to reach its full potential. I pursued additional funding opportunities and explored avenues for collaboration. By documenting the project's vision, forecasting its impact, and identifying areas for further refinement, we positioned ourselves for future applications and funding. Through transparent communication with stakeholders, I ensured that everyone involved remained informed and ensured strong stakeholder relationships.

Communication and Interpersonal: I offer well developed interpersonal and communication skills (digital, written and verbal), including a demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment. As a Project Officer for Smith Street, I encountered a situation where I had to resolve a conflict using my communication skills regarding reimbursing cleaning expenses incurred during major road works.

The stakeholders involved had already paid the supplier directly, which presented a challenge as we typically handled payments directly. To address this issue, I listened to their concerns and clarified the situation by asking questions to understand their perspective. It became apparent that while they were willing to cooperate, the reimbursement process was unfamiliar. I proposed offering future funds for later. This ensured that the stakeholder would receive the reimbursement they deserved and demonstrated our commitment to their satisfaction.

Conceptual, Analytical and Problem Solving: I offer strong analytical, research and problem-solving skills. One of the most significant problems I have solved in my career related to our internship program. This was due to demand exceeding available opportunities. Recognising the imbalance between the number of applicants and the limited number of internships, I sought additional funding sources. Using my networking abilities, I engaged with various university schools to secure supplementary financial support designated for expanding internship opportunities. I secured funding for two extra internships however it was identified that our infrastructure could not support the increased intake of interns.

Rather than proceeding with internships that we could not support, I deferred the implementation of the additional internships. I documented the contacts and relationships established during the funding acquisition process for future engagements, laying the groundwork for potential collaborations in subsequent years. While the immediate outcome may not have met our initial aspirations, the experience did show my ability to evaluate opportunities and solve problems.

Organisation: Additionally, I have well developed organisational skills, including prioritising competing demands to meet required deadlines. During a particularly challenging period marked by heightened pressure, I demonstrated my ability to manage multiple concurrent tasks by executing eight events within a compressed two-week timeframe. Facing the added complexities brought about by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, planning was vital to ensure the smooth execution of each event. I employed a systematic approach, utilising a whiteboard to list all necessary approvals for each event.

Recognising the potential delays by longer approval processes, I prioritised tasks, starting with those requiring the lengthiest lead times. By working through the whiteboard, I ensured that every critical step was noticed and that each event received the approvals promptly. I maintained constant communication with stakeholders, providing regular updates on progress and addressing any challenges. As a result, I delivered all eight events on schedule and within budget.

Special Requirements: I confirm that I am willing to complete medical examinations to verify physical fitness, that I possess a valid police clearance and that I can work flexible hours as required.

I look forward to the opportunity to discuss further how I can contribute to your team's success.

Yours Sincerely

A Client
